Beautiful Biofluorescence

When the sun goes down a whole new perspective on our day to day environment lights up.

We were lucky enough to have a guided walk by Reveal Nature into this fascinating new world. Taking the ordinary field edge and hedgerow and transforming it into a world or awe and wonder.

Reveal Nature specialise in biofluorescence which is a phenomenon where living organisms absorb light at one wavelength and re-emit it at a different wavelength. This process often involves specialised biomolecules such as proteins, which absorb light usually from blue or ultraviolet wavelengths and emit visible colours such as reds, oranges and greens.

It meant that whilst wearing UV protection goggles and by shining a UV torch, we were able to witness blue grass, red stinging nettles, green slime, orange fungus and blue eyes bugs! (As it turns out, the microfibres on my coat also glow and made me feel as though I was a walking glitterball…)

Members enjoyed this new way of viewing the ordinary and with a large amount of the world undocumented for biofluorescence research, it is a field just waiting for further exploration and discovery!
